Patience is a virtue, and you’ll need a lot of it to make these caramelized onions but I promise you, its worth it!
3 tbsp olive oil
2 bay leafs
How to make
Start by cutting 6 onions in thin slices And if onions make you cry, I sincerely apologize for the tears you will shed in this step
After you’ve wiped away your tears, add about 3 tbsp of olive oil to a large pot over medium heat
Next add your onions and stir so they are all coated in the oil
Add a few pinches of salt and 2 bay leaves plus any other extra seasoning you like then cook, stirring frequently until the onions start to turn translucent
At this point turn the heat to the lowest setting, cover and cook for about 5-10
Give the onions a stir, the cover again and continue cooking in 5-10 minute intervals, stirring in-between for about 1 – 1 and a half hours
After a while you’ll notice the onions will change colour to a golden amber and finally to a kind of orange-y brown and the volume will have reduced significantly
This is what you’re looking for to get that deep, rich flavour that goes so well on a burger or pizza or pretty much any savoury dish.
